The Golden State Warriors have parted ways with their former No. 2 pick, James Wiseman, as the trade deadline approaches. In another deal, the Dubs have regained an old acquaintance in Gary Payton II.
As reported by several media outlets, the Warriors have sent James Wiseman to Detroit. In a three-team trade with the Atlanta Hawks, the Warriors received five second-round picks and forward Kevin Knox in return. The reigning champions then sent this package to Portland to bring back an important part of the championship team from last season in Gary Payton II.
Another positive side effect of the deal is that the Warriors will save around 7 million dollars for this season and 30 million for the next year.
On the other hand, Wiseman’s difficult time with the Warriors has come to an end. The center was selected by the Dubs in 2020 before LaMelo Ball with the second pick, but due to injuries, he was unable to adjust to the NBA and only played 60 games for the 2022 champion. During the championship season, Wiseman didn’t play a single game due to a knee injury.
This season, the Warriors were hoping for Wiseman’s breakthrough, but instead, the 21-year-old was sent to the G-League at times. In 21 games, the big man averaged only 6.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. In Detroit, Wiseman could now receive more playing time, but with Isaiah Stewart, Marvin Bagley, Jalen Duren, and Nerlens Noel, there are four more potential centers on the roster.
On the other hand, the Warriors are reinforcing their defense on the wing with Payton II. Although the guard has had an unremarkable season for the Blazers due to injury, his skill set should better fit with the Warriors. This was proven by the 30-year-old last year, when he played an important role in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics.
